The real cost of resin 3d printing

The True Cost of Resin 3D Printing

I don’t currently own a resin 3D printer—and there are a few reasons for that:

  1. The cost adds up quickly

  2. Resin is toxic, and I value my health(say the guy who loves candy)

  3. It’s messy, and cleanup isn’t fun

This isn’t a rant or a review. It’s simply a breakdown of the real cost of getting started with resin 3D printing, especially if you're a beginner. I’ll do a similar post for FDM printers later.

I don’t speak from experience—I speak from hours of research, forums, and Reddit deep-dives. Links to sources are listed at the end.

so lets past the build plate and get into it

Printer

A popular beginner printer is the Elegoo Saturn 3 Ultra. It’s recommended because:

  • It has a decent build volume

  • It’s reliable and well-reviewed

  • It’s widely used, so help is easy to find

Prices:
$284.99 (sale)
$375.00 (regular)

Wash and Cure Station

You’ll need a wash and cure station to clean and harden your prints. I’d stick with the same brand for compatibility—Elegoo’s Wash and Cure Station 2.0 is a good option.

You need to wash off any excess liquid resin using a wash station, and then cure your print fully to solidify it. This is important because you don’t want to handle uncured resin directly because resin is toxic really I mean it

Prices:
$79.99 (sale)
$125.00 (regular)

Resin

You need resin to print with, which is just as important as the printer and other equipment. I’m sticking with Elegoo Standard Resin because it’s widely supported and easy to use

  • Works with common slicer profiles

  • Popular enough for support and troubleshooting

  • About $28–35 per liter

Safety Gear

Because resin is toxic, it’s important to be careful and protect yourself with the right safety gear.

  • Gloves: LANON chemical-resistant nitrile gloves – $16.99

  • Respirator: 3M Half Facepiece 6200 – $22.00

  • Cartridges: 3M 60921 Organic Vapor – $20.00

  • Eye Protection: 3M Virtua safety glasses – $20.00

Ventilation Setup

Resin fumes linger and can be harmful to breathe. I learned in science class that we need to breathe oxygen, not chemicals resin gives off. That’s why proper ventilation is essential.

  • Fan: Honeywell HT-900 – $20.00

  • Air Purifier: LEVOIT basic model – $50.00

  • Carbon Filters: Antidious 5-pack – $10.00

Total: ~$80.00

Estimated Total Cost

ItemSale PriceRegular Price
Printer$284.99$375.00
Wash & Cure Station$79.99$125.00
Resin (1L)$35.00$35.00
Gloves$16.99$16.99
Respirator + Cartridges$42.00$42.00
Safety Glasses$20.00$20.00
Ventilation Setup$80.00$80.00
Total$716.97$793.99

Conclusion

That “$375 printer” starts to look more like a $700–800 setup once you include the essentials. Resin printing has amazing results, but it’s not just plug and play. It comes with serious setup, safety, and hidden costs.

Hopefully this post helps you plan ahead and avoid unexpected expenses. Thanks for reading.
